Seamless cloud backup is also important for the same reason. Do you need more security than a passcode? Most devices now have secure authentication such as facial or fingerprint recognition in addition to a standard passcode, so your notes, files, email and other content stay safe if you ever lose your device. Many devices also allow you to expand storage with an SD or microSD card, and today’s tech means you’ll also get decent front and back cameras for quickly snapping photos (like that whiteboard before it’s erased) and video calling. How much storage do you need? Generally speaking, a good tablet for multitasking should have at least three gigabytes (GB) of memory (RAM) and 128 GB of storage so you can play content, download files and create documents.Do you need to multi-task? Whether you’re also using it for reading, web browsing, checking emails, watching videos and playing games in addition to writing, compiling lists or drawing.Related: The Best E-Readers and Tablet for Reading E-Books ![]() More than just a glorified smartphone, the best tablets for taking notes also work with a stylus so you can quickly write things down, keep everything organized on a hard drive or cloud, and search through everything later - which is why they’re perfect for high schoolers, college students, professionals and digital nomads. ![]() I found only a couple of moments for me that might not pass the twenty-first century sniff test: One of the characters, Chris, has some sort of unspecified physical disability that impairs movement and speech. There's accusations in a review or two of racism, but on adult read, I'd say that the racism is all internal to the characters, and Raskin does a solid job of showing how things a certain character might say or do regarding someone else's race is about their own knowledge deficits. We pop in and out of most of their heads at some point, which ends up giving the reader more insight than they each have on each other. Interestingly, however, it was probably one of the broadest casts I can remember reading: a black woman who is now a judge, who grew up poor a Greek family, whose skin is 'darker' than the black woman's (an interesting concept for a young white kid!) a Chinese family, one a recent immigrant a couple of economically limited white guys a suburban white family a single white older woman dressmaker. Initially, all the characters have aspects that make them seem flawed, or perhaps somewhat unlikable. Narration is third person, which is solidly done. ![]() An isolating snowstorm ramps up the tension. The tenants discover they have something additional in common when they are called together for the reading of Sam Westing's will. Initially, they are convinced to rent or buy units in the newly constructed Sunset Towers, a small building that has room for a coffee shop, a restaurant and a small office, perfect for further enticing the future tenants. It is a variation on the manor house mystery, with a very disparate group of people brought together physically. The delivery boy was sixty-two years old, and there was no such person as Barney Northrup." Then one day (it happened to be the Fourth of July), a most uncommon-looking delivery boy rode around town slipping letters under the doors of the chosen tenants-to-be. This glittery, glassy apartment house stood alone on the Lake Michigan shore five stories high. Sunset Towers faced east and had no towers. ![]() "The sun sets in the west (just about everyone knows that), but Sunset Towers faced east. Whatever it was, Raskin's story stayed with me for years. It could have been identification with the shin-kicking protagonist, nicknamed 'Turtle.' It could have been the clever signals of winds and atmosphere that run throughout the book. It might have been the cleverness of the mystery or it's absence of gore. But the one mystery that I could still have told you general details about the plot. Well, besides Encyclopedia Brown and Nancy Drew books. The Westing Game is first full-length mystery I remember reading. now i have to go write 250 academic words about it. as a grown up, i liked it very much, but thought the characters could have used a little fleshing out to make them more defined. i would have loved this book like crazy as a kid. i would have to fine tune it so it works better than the one they have on or (because, no, i would not like to see the aviator, thank you). because if i had had one of these when i was little, then it would have told me, "you love peggy parrish and her wordplay-based mysteries and you have seen the movie clue enough times that you can recite the whole thing (still can). and then i will have the perfect book-recommending resource. and i am going to take a little bit of my brain, and a little bit of everyone's brain here on (you'll be asleep, you wont feel a thing) and then i am going to moosh it all together, and put it in the brain of the red panda. This is what i am going to do: i am going to take a red panda, and i am going to learn genetics and i dunno - neuroscience. The New York Times Book ReviewĪ fascinating medley of word games, disguises, multiple aliases, and subterfuges-a demanding but rewarding book. Great fun for those who enjoy illusion, word play, or sleight of hand. Winner of the Boston Globe/Horn Book AwardĪ School Library Journal One Hundred Books That Shaped the CenturyĪ supersharp nfoundingly clever, and very funny. They could become millionaires-it all depends on how they play the tricky and dangerous Westing game, a game involving blizzards, burglaries, and bombings! Ellen Raskin has created a remarkable cast of characters in a puzzle-knotted, word-twisting plot filled with humor, intrigue, and suspense. This highly inventive mystery involves sixteen people who are invited to the reading of Samuel W. For over thirty-five years, Ellen Raskin's Newbery Medal-winning The Westing Game has been an enduring favorite. ![]() SC090.OWNERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-88 (TTY 1-80), OR GO TO HTTP://. As Motor Trend’s Detroit editor, Don McDonald wrote “Perhaps the most outstanding feature of the new Ford Thunderbird is the clever wedding of sports car functionalism with American standards of comfort”. Given these influences and the burgeoning American economy it was no surprise that the introduction of the 1955 Thunderbird was a huge success, easily filling a market niche. Today, roses are pretty much a universal symbol of love, with the meaning being shared across various cultures.Īcross much of the world, the red rose in particular is associated with love and romance, which is why it is the ultimate symbol of Valentine's Day. The Tudor Rose became the "Rose of England," which continues to be one of the most identifiable symbols in the UK. Many years later, the two roses were combined into one symbol. The House of Lancaster chose the symbol of a red rose, while the House of York chose a white rose. The rose also became the symbol of the civil wars that took place in 15th century England, which would become known as the Wars of the Roses. It meant that what was said under the influence of wine would remain confidential. The term “sub rosa,", which literally means " under the rose," dates back to ancient times when the Romans would hang roses from the ceilings of banquet halls. The CRi of T5 fluorescent bulbs generally range in the lower end of 70 -80 but there are options with more accurate color rendering up to 95. If you are using T5 lights for garage lighting or an art display, then make sure that you choose a model with a higher Color Rendering Index, CRi. However, this is still less than half of the expected lifespan of a T5 LED tube light which lasts an average of 50,000 hours. The energy efficiency of the T5 tubes means they also last the longest, around 20,000 hours. Compared to a T8, T5 tube can achieve higher luminous flux using less power. On the other hand, T5 tube lights are little powerhouses when comparing T5 vs T8 tube sizes. This is why the T5 is used in many of the same applications. There is not much difference in size between T5s and T4 lights. ![]() Be sure to measure the length of the tube and check the wattage before heading for the shops or placing an online order. If you are replacing a T4, you may struggle with finding the same fluorescent light bulbs sizes. They can range anywhere from 6 watts to 30 watts, the lower the number the lower the energy consumption, and many lengths. There is no industry standard for the length or wattage of T4 tube lights. Their size is what makes T4 lights popular for under cabinet lighting purposes and accent lighting for displays or a staircase. A color wheel goes through the entire spectrum and matches up colors with their opposites. Option one involves using a complementary color wheel. If you’re struggling to color match paint, there are options that work really well to choose a complementary color for painting your wall. What to do if you can’t find the perfect color match Only use this method if you’re just looking for an approximate color match rather than true color matching. However, technically speaking, phones tend to enhance or read colors differently than the human eye, so what you get using this method won’t be as good as actually taking in a paint chip for the spectrophotometer to read.Īdditionally, the glossiness of your phone’s screen may also affect the spectrophotometer’s effectiveness. ![]() Most professional paint stores these days have spectrophotometers, which can read colors off your phone and color match. Take a photo of the paint you’re trying to match on your smartphone and then head over to your local paint store. Take a high-definition photoĪlmost all phones these days come with high definition cameras. You just press the color matcher’s sensor against the item you’re trying to color match (walls, furniture, etc.), and the machine does the rest.Ĭolor matching gadgets often come with a lot of bells and whistles on the app end, too- meaning you can usually save palettes, see complementary colors, and compare two colors you’re considering side by side. They usually need to be paired with smartphones and tablets and can be bought off of Amazon for about $30-$60. In-home color matchers work pretty well and don’t involve you cutting up your wall. Don’t worry, once you cut it out, it’s easy enough to repair- just spread a little bit of spackle over it, give it a day to harden, smooth it off it with a fine grade sandpaper, and then paint over it with your new paint. If possible, use a section of your wall that will be hidden by furniture. That’s not a huge amount to cut out of your wall, but it will obviously be noticeable. ![]() Spectrophotometers need about a square inch to work well. As with all things in life, nothing beats the real thing. Lots of things can impact the shade of color when you take a picture or use your phone (such as shadows, light quality, time of day, and pixels). Spectrophotometers measure colors objectively and work best when they are able to bounce light off of the actual paint you’re trying to match. This method utilizes the spectrophotometer at your local paint store, but it involves the use of a razor. ![]() Just don’t forget to also match up your new paint’s glossiness level with the existing paint. Matching color swatches takes the longest amount of time, but is considered the most accurate. The color that looks good at all times of the day is the winner. To truly zero in on the perfect color match, observe it in different lights throughout the day, including morning, afternoon, evening, and artificial light at night. You’ll be able to narrow down your choices pretty fast. Once home, tape your swatches up on the wall and observe them throughout the day. At your local paint store, gather up all the paint swatches you believe might be your color and head back home (don’t worry, color swatches are free!). The thousands of various colored notecards you see in the paint section can help you if you’re patient. After all, if two methods recommend the same shade, then you know you’ve gotten pretty close. Many people use color matching apps in conjunction with other methods as a way to triangulate their color of choice. You can color match paint from the comfort of your couch without ever having to leave your house. The best thing about color-matching apps is how easy they are to use. By using those, you can even order your paint within the app. The best-reviewed ones often come from some of the bigger paint companies, which is good because they’re also free. There are paint matching apps for both iOS and Android available to help you paint match to your heart’s content. Read on for five ways to make paint matching easier than ever. The following methods will get you as close to a color match as you can be. Five ways to color match paintĪlthough it can be a time-consuming process, color matching is not impossible. When it comes to how to match paint on a wall, you shouldn’t experiment - stick with a tried-and-tested method. If you want to match paint with the best of them, choose one of the five methods listed below. But how to match paint? That largely depends on your temperament and the amount of time you have.
